How to Build an Email List

Updated: Jan 31, 2022

The first step in any successful marketing campaign is to build an email list. This allows you to reach out to potential customers directly and advertise your services or products at a discount or free of charge to those who opt-in to receive emails from you. Check out this guide on how to build an email list in 6 easy steps and learn how you can start reaching more people online!

Choose a Lead Magnet

When you want to market your product or service online, one of your best bets is to provide a valuable piece of content (in exchange for an email address). Content marketing is a growing trend among businesses that have found success with lead magnets like ebooks, webinars, courses, etc. The key here is quality—make sure what you’re offering provides enough value in return for their contact information.

Create a Landing Page

In order to build your email list, you need a way to collect your prospects’ contact information. This can be done in one of two ways: by using a landing page or by using a lead magnet. A lead magnet is any piece of valuable content that can be given away for free. It could be a white paper, webinar or checklist—basically anything that’s relevant and helpful, and can be exchanged for an email address.

Get Involved in Online Groups

If you really want to learn how to build your email list from scratch, then you should join online groups and ask for help, what are people needing help and guidance with? In order to do that, you have a few options: Join Facebook Groups about how to build an email list, join LinkedIn Groups and so on.

Engage With Your Audience

From a practical standpoint, if you want to succeed in marketing your business online, you need people on your email list. Creating compelling content is an important piece of growing your list—but it’s not all there is to it. In order for someone to subscribe to your list, they have to be interested in what you’re offering. And that interest comes from being engaged with your brand through social media and email campaigns.

Write Email Sequences

One of my favourite tricks for building an email list is to create lead magnet landing pages. The general concept behind these is that you’re providing a lead magnet (i.e., something of perceived value) for people in exchange for their contact information. For example, if you’re in business selling wine, you could create a PDF guide or eBook on how to pair different wines with certain foods—that’s your lead magnet.

Use Automation Tools

Today, you can use online tools like MailChimp for help managing your email list. These services allow you to send out automated emails (i.e., one that does not require any direct input from you). If someone opts into your email list, they’ll be sent an automated message with a link back to your website, along with some information about what will happen next on their end of things.

Don’t Forget About Traditional Channels

While building your email list is important, don’t forget about other marketing channels. If you’re a brand new business with no audience at all, it’s time to use traditional marketing methods. Do some research and find out what form of media local customers like most—social media? Advertising? Business directories? Direct mail? Set up a few initial campaigns for those avenues.
